First Degree Burns: area becomes red and swolen

Second Degree Burns: skin is red and painful, blisters appear

Third Degree Burns: blanched (white or grey) or blackened, area not painful

Treatment:



  • Cool the burn with running water
  • Use a water soluble ointment
  • Apply aloe or another cooling agent
  • Wear soft or loose clothing while the burn is healing
  • Do not put on a bandage
  • Take a pain reliever
  • Elevate the burn above the heart
