Cold Sores/Fever Blisters


HERPES SIMPLEX VIRUS TYPE 1 (HSV-1)


WHAT ARE THEY?

  • groups of small blisters on the lip, nose, in and around the mouth that turn into sores
  • often red, swollen, and sore.
  • they may break open and secrete a clear fluid.
  • they scab over in a few days and heal within two weeks.
  • usually spread when a person comes into contact with infected
    fluid

SYMPTOMS

  • pain around infected area, fever, vomiting, nausea, and sore throat
  • small children sometimes drool before they appear.

TREATMENT

  • usually start to heal within a few days.
  • skin creams, ointments, and pills - may only heal them quicker by one or two days

PREVENTION

  • avoid contact with infected body fluids.
  • avoid sharing eating utensils, drinking cups, or other items that a person with a cold sore may have used.
